Chapter 11: Ask Me Properly

I told Quentin about the photograph standing in his kitchen, with my coat still on.

I held a glass of water in both hands and didn't drink it.

He listened without moving.

When I got to the part about the watch in the picture, a muscle jumped in his jaw.

"He printed it?"

"He held it up to my face."

"What did he ask for?"

"A report on everything you tell me. Or the board gets the photo."

He set his glass down very precisely on the counter.

"I'll resign on Monday," he said.

"What?"

"I'll hand them my letter and tell them I'm leaving of my own accord. They can have the company. Merrick can have it. You'll be a woman who worked for a man who quit, and nobody will have a photograph to wave."

"No."

"Livia."

"No." My voice was steady and I was proud of it. "You don't get to decide that for me."

"It's my name on the door."

"It's my body in the photograph."

That stopped him.

He looked at me for a long time, and something eased in the line of his shoulders.

"What do you want to do?"

"I want to fight him. I want to be in that room on the eighth with you, and I want to watch his face."

"And the photograph?"

"Let him send it. Let him tell the board you slept with a woman in a mask at a hotel bar. There's no name on it. There's nothing in that picture to say it was me."
