Chapter 14: Dinner at Merrick's

Quentin wanted to come with me, and I said no.

"He asked for the heir," I said. "He gets the heir, alone, or he doesn't talk."

"Then I'm parking down the street."

"Quentin."

"I'm parking down the street, Livia. You can tell me to go home, and I'll sit there anyway."

I wore the watch.

Merrick lived in Lincoln Park, in a brick house with a green door and lights on in every window.

He answered it in an apron.

"Livia," he said, and his whole face crinkled. "I'm so glad. Come in, come in. I've made the lamb."

He took my coat.

He held out a wicker basket by the door.

"House rule," he said gently. "Phones go in here. Nobody records anybody at my table."

I looked at him, and he smiled, and I put my phone in the basket.

The dining room was warm and old-fashioned, with candles and a table laid for two.

He poured me wine and sat down across from me.

"You have his hands," he said. "I noticed at the elevator the first morning. I thought, who does she remind me of? It took me a month."

"The watch gave me away?"

"The watch in the photograph. W.H. on the back, I've seen that watch on his wrist at every board meeting for twenty years." He cut his lamb. "Then I called the lawyer's office as a courtesy and asked whether the heir had a mother who'd changed her name. The receptionist was very sweet."

I put my fork down.

"Where is it?" I said. "The thing of his you wanted to show me."
