Chapter 7: The Desk

At eight o'clock on Friday night, the thirty-first floor was empty except for the two of us and the cleaning cart at the far end.

I sat at my desk retyping the board packet from scratch.

Someone had changed the Denver figures in the shared file, and Quentin wanted every page rebuilt by hand.

He came out of his office with his jacket off and his sleeves rolled.

He stood behind my chair and read the screen over my shoulder.

"You've missed a comma on page four," he said.

"I haven't."

"You have. Come in here and fix it."

I followed him into his office.

He walked around the desk and sat in his chair, and I stood on the other side with the page in my hand.

"Lock the door," he said.

I turned and looked at him.

"Not in the building, sir."

He stared at me for a moment.

Then he laughed.

It was low and warm and entirely unexpected, and it changed his whole face.

I had never heard him laugh.

"There she is," he said. "Say it again."

"I'm only keeping your rules, Mr. Stroud."

"I know. I've regretted that rule since Tuesday."

"You made it."

"You made it. I've been very stupid about it." He leaned back. "Lock the door, Gia, and come here."

I locked the door.

I put the page down on the desk and walked around it, and he turned his chair to face me.
