Chapter 8: The Sixth Assistant

I didn't stop.

Merrick stood outside the door and talked about Denver for another minute, and I took Quentin deeper with every sentence.

"The sprinkler contractor can't do January," Merrick said. "I've got a call in. Are you listening?"

"I'm listening," Quentin said, and his voice cracked on the last word.

His thighs were shaking under my hands.

He pushed my head down once, hard, and held it there, and I felt him swell and spill down my throat without a sound.

I swallowed every drop.

He let go of my hair and breathed through his nose, very quietly.

"Good night, Merrick," he said.

"Good night. I'll wait for her at her desk."

His footsteps went away down the hall.

I sat back on my heels and wiped my mouth, and Quentin pulled me up onto his lap and kissed me, slow and deep.

"Go," he said against my lips. "Get your coat. Don't take the ride."

Merrick was sitting on the corner of my desk when I came out.

"There she is. Coffee?"

"The machine was broken."

"Ah." He looked at my mouth, and then at my eyes. "Let me drive you, Livia."

"I'll take a cab, Merrick. Thank you."

He shrugged, pleasantly.

Then he took a manila folder out of his briefcase and set it on the desk beside my keyboard.

"Read this on the weekend. It's the sixth assistant's file. Quentin signed her termination himself, citing conduct. You should know where you're sitting."

He squeezed my shoulder and walked off, whistling.

I opened the folder in the elevator.

Quentin's signature was on the last page, and the word printed beside it was conduct.
