Chapter 18: The Question
"Ask," I said.
Dean got out of the truck and walked around the hood to my door, and he opened it.
I got down into the stubble.
The field ran out gold on every side, and the sun was a red edge on the fence line.
He stood in front of me with his hat in his hand.
He didn't say anything for so long that I started to laugh.
"You're sweating," I said.
"I know I'm sweating."
"You tore up half a million dollars in Orrin's office and you're sweating over me."
"That was easier."
He reached into his shirt pocket and took out a small cloth bag, soft and gray with age.
He opened it and tipped a ring into his palm.
It was a thin gold band with one small stone, a chip of garnet, worn smooth on one side.
"This was my mother's," Dean said. "She left it to me, and I've kept it in a sock in a drawer for twenty years."
"I put every other dollar I had toward that note, and I never sold it. I'm not sure why. I think I knew."
I put my hand over my mouth.
"I don't have a farm to give you. You've already got the farm."
"I don't have anything but my back and my truck."
"Dean."
"I'd like to spend the rest of my life learning how to do right by you." He went down on one knee in the bean stubble, which crackled. "Marry me, Gretchen."
"You're kneeling in the dirt."
"I'm a farmer."
"You're asking me in the field."
"It's where I do everything else."
I laughed, and the laugh broke into something else, and I was crying.
