Chapter 10: The Christening

On Tuesday evening the whole Vasari family gathered at St. Anthony's for a baby's christening.

The baby belonged to one of Sandro's cousins, and he screamed through the whole thing.

I loved him instantly.

I sat in the second pew in a green dress Gianna had pressed, with the brass key hidden in my bra.

I held the baby's tiny fist while his mother wiped her eyes.

In the front pew Sandro's uncle sat with his silver head bowed and his hands folded, the picture of an old man at prayer.

Sandro stood at the font as the godfather, tall and grave, with a stranger's child in his arms.

He held the baby with a care I wasn't prepared for.

The priest poured the water.

The baby howled.

Everybody laughed, and for a moment the whole church was warm.

I looked at my husband's face, and I thought: whatever else he is, he is this.

Then the church doors opened behind us.

I felt the cold air first.

I turned my head.

Cora stood in the aisle in a navy suit and her good pearls.

Savannah stood beside her in a white dress.

"Forgive us," Cora said, in her sweetest voice. "We're late."

A murmur ran through the pews.

Nobody had invited them.

But a church is a church, and the christening was open to the parish.

She had picked her moment well.

In the front pew, the uncle did not turn around.
