Chapter 11: Church Basement
"Alone," Sandro repeated flatly, when I told him. "No."
"They said alone."
"They said a great many things."
"If you walk in with six men, he won't come out of that basement."
"He might not anyway."
"Sandro."
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he took my face between his hands.
"I'll be in the church above you," he said. "One floor. If you say my name, I'm there before the echo."
"All right."
"Go in first. Don't hurry. Don't sign anything."
I went in alone.
The basement of St. Anthony's smelled of wax and old hymnals.
A single bulb hung over a folding table.
My father sat in a metal chair under it, with his hands loose in his lap and his cardigan buttoned wrong.
He was not tied.
He was not bleeding.
He looked up when I came down the steps, and his face crumpled.
"Ivy. Honey. I'm sorry."
"Are you hurt?"
"No. They gave me coffee."
Ruggero Orsini stepped out of the shadow by the furnace.
He wore the gray coat and the gold crucifix, and he looked utterly calm.
"He is unharmed," Ruggero said. "I would not hurt an old man. I only wished to speak with his daughter."
"You took him from his yard."
"He came. Your sister called me and said where he would be. I offered him a ride."
