Chapter 14: Wednesday Night
On Wednesday night I found Gianna alone in the kitchen, scrubbing a pot that was already clean.
I put Ruggero's note on the counter between us.
"Two days," I said. "He walks into that hall on Friday and says nothing."
"I know, cara."
"You know what he won't say. Tell me what you know."
She dropped the pot into the sink and dried her hands on her apron, one finger at a time.
"Sit," she said.
I sat.
She pulled the other stool close, so our knees touched.
"I took the night shifts for the last four weeks," she said.
"I changed her sheets, I turned her, I held the basin when she was sick."
"Nobody told me that."
"Nobody asked."
"Did you know about the tea?"
Her mouth shook.
"I knew in the last week."
"She told me, the same night she told him."
"I thought she was out of her mind."
"Then I watched his uncle at the funeral, and he cried too hard."
"You never said."
"To whom? To Ruggero, who drinks with that man on Sundays? To the captains who eat from his hand?"
I took her hands.
"Gianna, did she leave anything? A letter? Anything in writing?"
