Chapter 15: Savannah Comes Home

I took my sister by the elbow and brought her through the gate myself.

Sandro said nothing.

He only nodded to the guards, and they stepped back.

In the kitchen I sat Savannah on a stool under the bright light and tilted her chin up.

The cut on her lip was deep, but it was clean.

Gianna handed me gauze and a bowl of warm water without being asked.

"Hold still," I said.

"It stings."

"It's supposed to."

Savannah hissed through her teeth and then, for the first time in her life, did not complain.

Sandro stood in the doorway with his arms crossed.

"Who hit you?" he asked.

"The driver. The big one with the ring."

"Why?"

She looked at the floor.

"Because I told Ruggero I'd lied."

Gianna's spoon stopped in the pot.

"Lied about what?" I said.

"I never heard him confess anything."

Savannah's voice cracked.

"At the pre-wedding dinner I was in the hall, and he said a few words on the phone."

"What words?"

"'I'll carry it.' That's all. I made up the rest."

I sat back.

"You told Ruggero my husband confessed to you."

"He gave me five thousand dollars. He said I'd be taken care of."

"You sold Dad to him."

"I didn't know he'd really..." She pressed the back of her hand to her mouth.

"I thought they'd only talk to him. Then the driver told me Friday is the plan."
