Chapter 19: Her Grave
He did not answer, and I thought I had spoken too soon.
Then he put his forehead against my knee and left it there.
"I have never been to her grave," he said.
The car moved on through the harbor traffic.
"Not once in two years?"
"I couldn't stand in front of the stone and know whose hands gave her the cup."
"They were never your hands."
"They were."
"Sandro. Look at me."
He lifted his head.
"He sent the tin and you made the tea," I said.
"That's what he planned."
"He didn't just poison her."
"He made you the one holding the cup."
His eyes were red.
"You loved her," I said. "He used it. That's the crime. It isn't yours."
For a long time he said nothing.
"Tomorrow morning," I said. "I'll drive."
He nodded.
The cemetery lay on the east side of the city, a hillside of old oaks and gray stones.
It was Saturday, cold and bright, and the leaves were coming down.
Gianna walked ahead of us with a bunch of white chrysanthemums.
A priest in a plain black coat waited at the foot of the slope, and beside him stood Ruggero's mother on her cane.
