Chapter 8: The Hospice Room

"It isn't a mistake," Sandro said behind me.

I jumped.

He stood in the hall in his shirtsleeves with his jacket over one arm, and he had been watching me for who knew how long.

"I left it open," he said. "You'll go in whether I do or not. I would rather you did it with my permission."

"Your permission."

"Yes."

His eyes were tired and clear.

He stepped close and put his hand against the side of my face.

His thumb dragged along my cheekbone.

I leaned into his palm before I could stop myself.

"Look at whatever you want," he said. "The drawer stays locked."

"Why?"

"Because I decide when."

It was the old Sandro, calm and absolute.

It should have made me furious.

It made my knees weak.

"I have a meeting I can't move," he said. "Your shift starts at one. The driver takes you and brings you home."

"Is that an order?"

"It's a fact."

He kissed me, slow, with his hand in my hair, and the kiss said more than he had.

Then he walked away down the hall, and I heard the front door shut.

On the way to the east hall I had passed the dining room.

I had looked in at the tall plant by the window.

Two days ago it had been a glossy, thick-leaved fig.
