Chapter 14: The Jeju House
Seo-yeon held the phone out so he could see.
He read it, sitting up in the grey light with his hair flat on one side.
"Don't come," he repeated.
"She means it."
"I know she does." He was already reaching for his own phone. "It's still my house."
He booked the ten-thirty flight with his thumb while she watched.
At one o'clock a rented car turned off the coast road above Aewol and went up a lane between black stone walls.
The walls were made of rough volcanic rock, piled without mortar, the kind the wind goes through instead of over.
Behind them, dark green rows of mandarin trees, heavy with small hard fruit.
The house sat at the top of the orchard. Low, long, with a tiled roof held down against the wind.
Sheets of white plastic flapped over a new concrete wing at the back.
A wooden gate stood across the drive.
A woman of about sixty-five stood in front of it with her arms folded. Broad, weathered, a padded vest, a scarf tied under her chin.
Do-hyun stopped the car and got out.
