Chapter 14: Her Mouth, His Eyes
Winifred received us in her library, behind a silver tea tray.
The room was all dark wood and leather spines, and a portrait of Stefan's father hung over the fireplace.
She poured a single cup and did not offer us one.
Stefan laid the lab report on the tray, on top of the sugar tongs.
She looked at it for exactly as long as it takes to read two lines.
"Ninety-nine point nine nine," she said. "How efficient."
"You knew," Stefan said.
"Of course I knew."
She said it plainly.
"You knew before I signed the adoption papers. You knew when you put her in my arms."
"I knew the day she was born," Winifred said. "I was in the corridor outside the operating room."
I felt the floor tilt under my shoes.
"You were twenty-seven when the doctors said you would never be a father," she said to her son.
"I sat in your hospital room and watched you stop wanting things."
"Mother."
"You were thin as a rail, and you told me you were finished.
