Chapter 30: Blossom

I showed the note to Cassian at breakfast.

He read it twice. Then he turned it over.

"What did the gown cost?" he said.

"I don't know. She never said. She just said the gifts end at midnight."

"Did they?"

"The gown stayed. The slippers stayed." I folded the note up small. "Everything stayed."

He was quiet.

"Then it's still owing," he said.

I put the note in my mother's trunk, under the silver gown, and shut the lid.

We went north at the end of May, before I got too big for the carriage.

Dulcie stayed behind at Merriwether House with the old foreman. She cried when we left, then told us she hadn't, then threw a seed tray at her brother when he said it rang anyway.

"It can't ring," she said. "You can't hear anything."

"I didn't need to," he said.

We crossed the border bridge on the first of June.

I'd seen the Thornwood gray. I'd seen it black, and white with snow.

I'd never seen it like this.

The orchards were in blossom.

Not every tree. Some had been too far gone, and we'd burned them.

But most of them had come back. The ones I'd cut clean in the autumn, and the ones the village had cut all winter while we were gone.
