Chapter 22: The Captain
I went out onto the steps with Jude behind me and half the great hall at my back.
Brooks stayed on his knees in the snow.
His knees were soaked through, and he was shaking.
"Bobbie," he said. "Please."
Students spilled out of the doors and stopped in a semicircle.
Nobody laughed.
It was worse than laughter.
"Get up, Brooks," I said.
"I can't. If I get up, it's over."
"It's over."
"It isn't." His voice cracked.
"They took the captaincy this morning. The coach pulled my jacket off the hook while I watched."
"I heard."
"The London offer is gone. My father won't answer his phone. The university is reviewing my acceptance. I've got nothing, Bobbie. I've got you."
"You never had me."
"You said you loved me. On the library steps."
"I said it to a boy who turned out not to exist."
He flinched.
"I'll tell them it was all me," he said. "The bet, the account, all of it."
"I'll stand up in front of the school and say it. I'll do anything you want."
"You were ready to say anything," I said. "You told a man you'd sell Sheridan out for a plane ticket."
