Chapter 15: Read It Out

The screenshot was a photo of my toy.

It lay on a hospital counter next to a stack of charts, in the pale pink I had picked out in a drugstore two years ago.

Preston had taken it months ago, when he went through my bag and laughed.

Under it he had typed one line to sixty residents.

Our nurse Brynn's "medical device." Her attending treats her personally. Ask him for what.

Eleven residents had already answered with the same laughing face.

Ezra read it over my shoulder.

He did not say a word. He swung his legs off the bed and reached for his pants.

"I'll handle him," he said.

"No."

"Brynn."

"He did it to me. It's mine."

He looked at me for a long moment with his shirt half on.

"Then I'm coming with you," he said. "I'll stand at the door."

We got to Mercy Ridge at seven.

Dee met us at the elevators in her coat, with her phone in her hand.

"The chair paused your forty-eight-hour clock this morning," she said. "Forty-one names did it. The unit gets an open hearing Tuesday at ten."

"Where is he?"

"The resident lounge, second floor. He's been showing it to people since five."

"Good," I said. "I want people there."

I walked down the corridor with my scrubs wrinkled and yesterday's mascara under my eyes.

I did not run, and I did not hide my face.

Ezra stopped outside the lounge door, as he had promised, with his arms folded.

I went in.

It was a long room with a coffee machine and lumpy couches.

About fifteen residents were in it, in scrubs and cargo pants, eating bagels off a box.

Preston stood at the center with his phone held up, laughing at something.
