Chapter 23: The Key Ring
I knew something was up three weeks before it happened.
Ezra had started going quiet in the car, and then going pink when I looked at him.
Dee caught me at the desk on a Thursday, with her glasses on her nose.
"Don't ask me anything," she said.
"I wasn't going to."
"Good. Because I'm a vault."
On the second Saturday in December it snowed.
Ezra cooked dinner in his own kitchen, which meant that when I came in at seven with snow melting in my hair, the apartment smelled like smoke.
I had my bag on my shoulder and my keys in my fist, on the key ring he had given me in October with the key to 9C.
"It smells like smoke," I said.
"The garlic."
"What did you do to the garlic?"
"I don't want to talk about the garlic."
I laughed, and he looked at me as if he felt it in his stomach.
He took my coat and hung it up.
He took my bag too.
Then he took my keys out of my hand.
"Ezra?"
"Stay there."
I stood in his hallway with my cheeks pink from the cold and my hands empty, watching him.
He slid something off my key ring, behind his back.
It was a gold band with a small stone, and he had threaded it beside the key that morning while I slept.
He held it up so the light caught the stone.
My face changed. I felt it change.
"Ezra."
"I had a speech," he said. His voice was not steady. "It was a good one. Dee helped. I've lost it."
"Say it anyway."
"For five years I read one text on a phone. I never answered it, and I told myself it was for you."
He got down on one knee.
His knee hit the hardwood with a bang, and I put my hand over my mouth.
"I'm not going to waste another day, Brynn. I'm not going to wait for the right moment, because I've been waiting for it since your brother's wedding."
