Chapter 22: Fire
"Everyone away from the windows," Cade said.
He said it quietly, the way he spoke on the pitch when he wanted fifteen men to move together.
Marlo dropped the pie knife.
Mavis stood, and her cane struck the tile once.
"Trent, the back door.
"Marlo, the bat.
"Sorcha, with me."
A heavy shape crossed the lawn outside the kitchen glass.
Then something smashed in the study at the far end of the hall, and a smell like a gas station rolled down the corridor.
"They're not here to talk," Trent said.
"Call the police," Cade said. "Now."
Trent already had the phone to his ear.
I ran for the study.
Cade caught my wrist at the door.
"No."
"The ledger's in there."
"I'll get it."
"You can't breathe in there, Cade, you have four broken ribs!"
"Then you'll hold the door, and I'll hold my breath."
Flame bloomed behind the plywood on the window.
It was orange and fast, and it climbed the curtains in a heartbeat.
The desk caught.
The rug caught.
Black smoke rolled out of the room, thick and greasy.
