Chapter 17: The Statement
Desmond came out onto the step and lifted Posy off the gravel without a word to me.
She looked at me over his shoulder, with the paper tiara hanging off one ear.
I did not follow.
Two officers were already crossing the lawn, and I wanted both of them to see my hands.
I gave my statement beside the juggling rabbit's abandoned head.
The younger officer copied the father's video onto his own phone and watched it twice.
"Ma'am, nobody's charging anyone tonight," he said. "But don't leave the county."
"I won't."
"And stay away from the Roarke family."
"I'd like to," I said. "They keep inviting me."
Lake Forest Hospital smelled of floor cleaner and burnt coffee.
Hester wanted to come, and I put her in the Chairman's car with a blanket.
Garret had reached the gates by then, and he drove me himself.
"I'll wait in the lot," he said.
"It may be long."
"I brought a book."
The woman at the front desk looked at my name and then at her screen.
