Chapter 20: Visiting Hours
"Why are you telling me this?" I said into the phone.
"Because he read my statement back to me tonight," Lydia whispered. "He said, after Wednesday you won't need to remember anything."
The tap ran harder.
"Tomorrow at four he's at the tower with the buyers. I'll be home with Posy and the nanny."
"I'm not allowed within five hundred feet."
"Then get an order that says you are." She hung up.
Garret was already reaching for his reading glasses.
By noon the public defender in the rumpled tie had been to the judge's clerk.
The clerk had been waiting for him with a piece of paper.
The Family Services supervisor had written to the court about Sunday.
She had written that a seven-year-old sat two hours at a table on Halsted Street.
The girl refused juice and asked everyone who came in whether it was her mother.
The judge had signed a make-up visit before lunch.
Tuesday, four o'clock, at the child's residence.
Supervised by the social worker.
Protective order modified for those hours, and those hours only.
"Desmond won't open the door," Garret said, in the truck.
"He will if the door is on camera."
