Chapter 19: The Name on the Wall

Anke's POV

Lorenz read the king's letter standing in the gateway, with snow on his shoulders and seventeen women behind him.

Then he folded it and handed it to Gerd.

"Tell His Majesty the water will be out by April," he said to the messenger. "And thank him for writing."

That was January.

By March there were eighteen women living in the lodge, two to a bed and four in the study.

They were all his property by the lord's ransom, every one of them.

The law said they could never leave his house.

So they stayed in his house and sang in his hall, and the cook pretended to hate it.

On a gray morning in March, the alewife brought the assembly up the hill.

"There's not a finder in this valley," she told me in the yard. "But the law's got a long nose."

"If you can't come down to the hall, the hall comes up to you."

So the whole town crowded into his hall, the way it had at midwinter, with no ham this time.

The widow had asked for the meeting.

She stood up first, with her big scarred hands folded in front of her.
