Chapter 30: The Bill of Sale
For a long moment nobody in the square moved.
Then the king came down off his dais.
He came down the steps slowly, an old man in a heavy crown.
He walked across the open cobbles to the first wagon and stopped below me.
He looked at the silver for a long time.
"Master of the Mint," he said, without looking away from it. "Weigh it. Here. In front of them."
The Master of the Mint already had his brass scales off the mule.
His guards set up a trestle in the middle of the square, and the city pressed in to watch.
The Velde men carried the bars from the wagons to the scales, two at a time.
The Master of the Mint weighed every one and called it out, and his clerk wrote it down.
After the first wagon, the crowd started counting with him.
I had heard a crowd do that once before, in Velde, over sacks of barley.
It sounded the same in a city.
It took until the shadows of the bronze kings had moved a yard across the square.
Anke never once looked at the silver.
She looked at me.
When the last bar came off the scales, the Master of the Mint read from his clerk's paper.
