Chapter 43: The Order
The whole of Velde came up the hill behind the guards.
By the time the captain reached the mine head, there were five hundred people standing around the engine in the snow.
The miners had their picks, and the alewife had her ladle and her chain.
The great beam went on rising and falling over our heads, slow as a church bell.
The captain was a decent-looking man of forty with a frozen mustache.
He unfolded the paper and read it out.
"For the complaint of the far councils, the engine at Velde is to stand still for one month from this day."
"The crown's engineers will inspect it and report."
"By the king's hand, and by the hand of his heir, for the business of the north."
He held it up so I could see.
The king's signature was at the bottom, shaky.
Under it, firm and black, was Ottmar's.
"A month," I said.
"Yes, my lord."
"Do you know what happens to a mine when its pumps stand still for a month?"
The captain looked at the shaft.
