Chapter 48: The Birth Book

I opened it that night at the table in the council house, with a candle at each elbow.

Anke sat on one side of me and Lotte on the other, eating bread.

The old healer of the Erlental sat across the table with her hands folded.

The book went back sixty years in a dozen different hands.

Every birth had a line: the date, the house, the mother's name, boy or girl.

Every death had a line too, and since the first snow there had been a great many.

Here and there, beside a girl's birth, someone had drawn a small ink star.

"That's a girl born with something in her," the old healer said. "We mark them, so the council knows to look."

I turned back ten years and counted the stars.

There were three.

Then I turned forward to January of this year, eleven months ago.

The first star of this year was on the ninth of January.

The next was a week later, and there were two more before the end of the month.

After that there was a star on nearly every page.
