Chapter 53: The Line

"Can he speak?" I shouted up at her.

The woman who heard through walls put the glass back to her eye and watched the arms for a long minute.

"It doesn't say," she called down. "Only that he fell in the hall last night, and the healer's with him."

Anke had my arm in both hands.

"We go back," she said. "Now. I'll have the barge up the river in three days."

"We can't."

I was looking up past the tower at the palace on the bluff, at the tall windows of the throne hall.

"Ottmar will have heard the same news by now," I said. "And Ottmar is here, and the king isn't."

The woman who heard through walls came down the tower stairs to meet us at the bottom.

"I hear a good deal from up there, Lord of Velde," she said quietly. "The palace is only a wall away."

"Your cousin has had lords in his rooms since dawn. Thirty of them, perhaps."

"He's asked them all to be in the throne hall at the morning bell."

"For what?"

"For a regent," she said.

The throne hall at Kronhal was long and cold, with banners down both walls and the empty throne at the end.
