Chapter 10: The Offer
Caspian walked her to the door of the Prince's rooms, and she told him not to come in.
"I will not be more than ten feet away," he said.
"He asked for me alone. If you walk in, he wins whatever this is."
His jaw worked.
"Ten feet," Caspian repeated, and stepped back into the corridor, hand on his sword.
Mio knocked.
The palace apartments of the heir were all cream and gilt, with silk on the walls and a marble fireplace.
Prince Leopold sat in front of it at a writing desk with a glass of wine.
A footman stood behind him with his hands folded.
He was a long, thin young man in grey livery, and he did not meet her eyes.
"Tilda," the Prince said warmly. "Come in. Sit."
"I'll stand, Your Highness."
"As you like." He smiled. "I owe you an apology for the tea."
"There's nothing to apologize for."
"Oh, but there is. I was hasty. I think you and I could be friends."
He took a leather purse from the desk and set it down with a heavy clink.
"Fifty gold crowns," said the Prince.
"There is a cottage in the country, near Alderwick, with a garden and a cow."
"It could be yours by the week's end."
Mio said nothing.
"All I ask," he went on gently, "is that you tell the Queen that your mistress ordered you to write the letter."
"In front of the whole court."
The room seemed to tilt.
The cottage, the gold, the cow.
It was almost sweet.
"And I would pardon you," said Leopold. "Freely. In the Queen's name. A frightened maid, obeying a wicked mistress."
"She didn't order me to write it," Mio said.
The footman's eyes flicked up and down again.
"Of course she did," the Prince said pleasantly. "It is what the court wants to hear."
