Chapter 14: The Bars

The Queen's tower had one window, one cot, and a door made of iron bars.

Mio had been inside it since noon.

The Queen had not said why.

She had only said, in her plain chair, "A witness who sleeps in either house will not be believed. Sleep under mine."

Two Queen's Knights stood at the foot of the stair, and the lamp on the wall burned low.

It was past midnight, and the stone was cold through her shift.

She lay on the cot with her knees drawn up and her eyes open.

Boots came up the stair, slow and steady.

She knew that step.

She was off the cot and at the bars before he reached the landing.

Caspian stood outside in his black coat, with a ring of keys in one gloved hand.

Behind him, at the turn of the stair, a young knight stood with his face to the wall.

"He is looking at the plaster," Caspian said quietly. "He will go on looking at it."

"You can't be here."

"I am the Commander of the Queen's Knights. I may visit any prisoner."

"I'm a witness."

"Then I am visiting a witness."

He did not unlock the door.

He stood very close, and the bars lay between them, cold black iron a hand's width apart.

"Come to the bars, Tilda."

She came until her forehead touched the iron.

He reached through and took her chin in his glove, and kissed her.

It was a hard kiss, hungry and a little angry, and the iron pressed into her cheeks.
