Caspian's bare hand lay at the small of her back all the way up the Queen's steps.
His thumb pressed once, between her shoulder blades, and stayed there.
"Do not look at me," he said in her ear. "If you look at me, I will kiss you in front of the court."
"That would be unprofessional."
"I have not been professional since the carriage house."
She nearly laughed, and was calm.
The Queen's court sat in the Hall of the Long Night, a great cold chamber hung with silver lamps.
Nobles filled the benches, from the council lords in grey fur to ladies in winter velvet.
The Queen sat on the dais in a plain black gown, with the Prince beside her in white and gold.
Verena stood at the rail in crimson, with her chin high and her ringlets pinned.
When she saw Mio, her violet eyes went wide with fury and fear.
Mio gave her the smallest nod.
"Tilda Quill," said the Queen. "Stand."
The hall hushed.
Mio walked to the center of the black marble floor, and stood on a silver star set in it.
