"You are going home," Zhaoxue said.

She said it that night in the corridor of the guest courtyard, with the door of her room shut behind her.

Linxia stood in front of her with her arms folded.

"No," she said.

"Take your father. Take the two hundred. Tell him the festival is cancelled and ride back to the coast."

"Why?"

"Because it's two nights away."

Zhaoxue had counted it on her fingers every morning.

"Because something is going to happen. I don't know what. Ning read my list, and he's been so kind, and every time he's kind I feel sick."

"He said keep me close."

"He said it because I'll be on the mountain when it burns!"

Her voice rang down the empty corridor.

Linxia did not step back.

"Zhaoxue," she said. "Look at me."

Zhaoxue looked.

"You gave me your seal because you thought I was the knife. Now you want to send me away because you think I'm the one who'll be cut. It's the same fear in a different coat."

"It's not the same."

"It is. You can't keep anyone safe by making them leave."

"I can keep you safe!"

"You can't," Linxia said. "I'm staying. I chose it."

"You chose it because of a list."

"I chose it off any list."

She took one step.

Zhaoxue's back met the wall.

Linxia put her hands on either side of Zhaoxue's head, flat against the plaster, and bent until their faces were an inch apart.
