Chapter 29: As Long as It Took
For forty minutes my mother was exactly who the church believed she was.
Her lawyer led her through the husband she buried and the daughter she took in at eleven.
She described a widow's long nights, and the jury listened.
She dabbed her eyes with a folded handkerchief.
She said "my girls" six times, and the juror in the cardigan stopped writing.
"Thank you, Mrs. Haldane," her lawyer said. "Nothing further."
The prosecutor stood up with a single sheet of paper in her hand.
"Mrs. Haldane, you ran the altar guild at St. Brendan's for eleven years."
"I did."
"You are known for your tea."
"I'm known for my kindness, I hope."
"Every night at ten you carried a cup to Sloane's room."
"Every night for twelve years, yes. She was a frightened child."
"And you stood in the doorway until she drank it."
"I wanted her to sleep."
"You wrote down when she woke."
"I'm a careful mother."
The prosecutor held up the sheet.
"Exhibit forty-one. A page from your black composition book, headed The night before. May I read the second line from the bottom?"
"It's a private note," my mother said.
"It was found in your church lockbox, in your handwriting, under a purple altar cloth." The prosecutor read it without any heat. "Three-fifty, D. drives her. I cry at the hospital. A girl who nearly dies is grateful. A grateful girl stays."
My mother's face did not change.
"Who is the girl, Mrs. Haldane?"
