Reborn: I Let My Mother Suffer the Price of Her Favoritism novel · Chapter 30 of 32

Chapter 30: Guilty

The jury filed back in and sat down, and not one of them looked at the defense table.

I took that for the verdict before the paper moved.

My mother stood for it with her hands folded and her chin level.

She had dressed for the day in her best navy suit, and she had put on her pearls that morning.

"Madam foreperson," the judge said. "Has the jury reached a verdict?"

The woman in the first seat rose with a sheet of paper.

"We have, Your Honor."

"On the first count, conspiracy to commit assault, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

Somewhere behind me, Everett's grandmother said "Amen" under her breath.

"On the second count, unlawful administration of a controlled drug?"

"Guilty."

My mother's hands came apart and went together again.

"On the third count, cruelty to a person in her care?"

"Guilty."

The foreperson sat down, and the courtroom made a low sound I felt through the floor.

I had expected to feel something large.

What I felt was Everett's hand around mine, warm and steady, and underneath it the hard floor of a room I was allowed to leave.

"Mrs. Haldane," the judge said. "The jury has spoken. Sentencing will be in eight weeks. In the meantime, the State has moved to revoke your bail, and given what this court has heard, the motion is granted."
