Chapter 21: Take It Off Me
Neve's POV
"Let the Council hear the steward," said Pell.
He said it pleasantly, to the bolted doors and the silent benches.
Edric came out of the benches at the back with his blue coat buttoned to the throat.
He walked up the long aisle alone, and I watched every cloaked head turn to follow him.
At the foot of the dais he bowed to the king.
"Steward," Pell said. "Which of these two women is your sister Sorrel?"
"That one," said Edric, and pointed at the white gown. "Sorrel Fenwick, who wears your circlet."
"And the other?"
"Is Neve, my sister. She is not a stranger and she is not an impostor."
A growl ran along the benches.
"She is a twin who has entered the capital against the king's own decree," Pell said. "Under it, she hangs."
"Under the same decree, I put my name on a paper in Highmoor before the envoy ever read it," Edric said. "I signed away my sister's right to travel because I was afraid for my post. I'd like the Council to hear that, too."
The growl stopped.
Pell's smile thinned.
"And I heard Sorrel say, in the Healer's Tower, three nights ago, that she signed a paper to make Neve's share of the circlet larger. She did it because the Council told her it would double her years."
Every head in the hall turned to the white gown.
Sorrel did not move.
She stood in the middle of the aisle with the band shining on her brow, and I saw her hands start to shake.
"That is a lie," she said, and her voice cracked. "My brother is confused. He has not slept."
