Chapter 20: The Ring She Chose
The jeweler on Thames Street had been open since before the war, and he put the velvet tray on the counter without being asked.
"Not that one," Clara said. "Nothing with a green stone."
Margery sat on the customer stool in a hat the color of eggplant, with both hands folded on her cane.
"I'm only here to watch," she said. "Do not look at me."
The tray held thirty rings.
Clara went through them with her left hand, which was the one she trusted, and passed over diamonds and sapphires and a pearl in a gold claw.
She stopped at a plain band with a small grey stone set low into it, so low it barely caught the light.
"That one."
"The moonstone?" the jeweler said. "It's not worth much."
"It matches my eyes. I'd like to pay for it myself."
She put down a check from her own pay at the yard.
It was not a large check.
Margery looked at it, and at the ring, and her pale eyes went suddenly wet.
"His mother's ring was a good ring," Margery said. "But I'll tell you something. She did not choose it. Alexander's father picked it out for her and put it on her hand, and she wore it for thirty years because she could not say no."
"I know."
"I thought you might."
Clara slid the grey ring onto her right hand.
She kept the green one on her left, where Alexander had put it, and she did not take it off.
That evening the housekeeper had gone home, and Margery had gone up to bed with a very pointed good night.
Alexander came into the kitchen at ten with his jacket off and his sleeves turned back, and stopped.
