Chapter 34: The Hand Inside the Archive

Sera caught Kael's forearm before he crossed the broken seal. 'Not first,' she said. 'Not through a door someone else opened.'

His arm was corded tight under her hand. He wanted to go in. She could feel it in the tendon, in the half-step he had already taken and was holding back. He looked at her once, then at the doorway, and did not move.

'Guards behind us,' she told the captain. 'Lamps high. No one touches a shelf until I say.'

The archive door hung open on its lower hinge, the seal cut clean through and the two halves of it lying on the step like a broken plate. Sera went down the short stair first with her lamp raised, and the room opened around her, long and low and cold, the shelves running back into the dark in rows.

Someone was in the third row. She heard the page before she saw the hand. A single sheet being worked free of a stack, quick, then quicker.

Aldren had his back to the door and a leather file open on the shelf in front of him. He was sliding a page into it, and he was not doing it well, because his hands were shaking and the page caught on the file's edge and bent.

'Pack Scribe,' Sera said.

He turned. He got the file closed against his chest and his face into some shape of calm, and he did it fast, which told her he had practiced the face and not the hands.
