Chapter 35: The Record That Names Her

Kael set the page down in front of Eln and did not take his hand off it.

'Keep your hand on it,' he told the scribe. 'She takes the first question.'

The scribe put his palm flat on the corner of the withdrawal record. The gallery had followed them in from the hearing and now stood along the archive wall, and the neutral guards had made a lane down the middle of the room so nobody could say later that anyone had crowded the table.

Sera took the second page, the original archive entry, and laid it beside the first, edge to edge, so the two dates sat an inch apart under the lamp. Two hours. The entry, then the withdrawal. Same hand. Same ink.

'Aldren,' she said. 'You logged this.'

'I logged what the clerk brought me.'

'You logged it,' she said, 'and you sealed my training file the same afternoon. I would like the panel to hear why those two things happened on the same day.'

Eln settled onto the bench the guards had dragged in from the anteroom. She said nothing. The chipped slate at her collar caught the lamp.

Aldren's ink-stained fingers found the edge of his jerkin and worried it. 'The training file was sealed on Luna's order. That is procedure when a candidate withdraws. The file closes with the candidacy.'
