Chapter 12: Three in the Morning
My phone rang at three in the morning, five nights after the council.
I was awake before the second ring.
I had been sleeping lightly for a week, with Dominic's arm around me and one ear turned toward the door.
The screen said ROISIN.
I looked at it for a moment.
Beside me, Dominic opened his eyes.
"Don't," he said softly. "It might be a trap."
I answered.
"Fiona." My sister's voice was a thread. It shook, and I had never heard it so small. "Fiona, please."
"Roisin. What is it?"
"I'm bleeding."
Everything in me went still.
"How much?"
"I don't know. A lot. I woke up and the sheets are," she said, and her voice broke. "It hurts. It hurts so much."
"Where's Nino?"
"On the couch. He came home drunk. I tried to wake him. I can't wake him." She was crying hard now. "I called the doctor. The Brancato doctor. He said it's normal at this stage. He said to drink the tea and lie down."
"Roisin, listen to me."
"I drank it. I drank it every day, Fiona, I promised her."
"Listen. Don't drink anything else. Don't touch the cup. Where are you?"
"The apartment. In Tribeca."
"I'm coming."
"Don't tell Rosalia." The words tumbled out of her. "Please don't. Please, she'll move me to her clinic and I won't be able to get out. I'll be in that house, and she'll be there every day with the cup. Don't tell her."
"I won't."
"Promise me."
"I promise. Put a towel under you and lie on your side. Unlock the door. I'll be twenty minutes."
