Chapter 14: The Hallway

I stood up and put myself between Rosalia and my sister's bed.

"No," I said.

"Fiona, honey." Rosalia laid a hand on her own chest. "Nino woke up and found blood all over his bathroom. He called me, crying. Of course I came."

I looked at Nino.

He wouldn't look at me.

"The clinic has a nurse waiting," Rosalia said. "A room with a view of the garden. The same doctor who has cared for this family for thirty years."

"She's staying here."

"She's a Brancato wife. She's not staying in a hallway in Bay Ridge."

Then I saw who stood behind her.

Two women in good wool coats had come around the curtain, and two of the old capos with them.

They were wives and husbands I had sat beside at Sunday dinner.

Rosalia had not driven across Brooklyn alone at six in the morning.

She had brought a crowd.

"I called the girls from church on the way," she said softly, to me and to them. "I thought someone should be here, when a girl's own sister drags her out of her bed in the night."

"Dragged?" I said.

"We will get to what you did."

Behind the capos I saw the grey braid of the emergency doctor.

The night nurse stood beside her, and a security guard with his thumbs in his belt.

Everyone in that corridor was watching.

Dominic stepped up beside me and said nothing.

He didn't have to.

"Ma'am." The grey-braided doctor spoke clearly, for the whole hall. "Your daughter-in-law has a threatened pregnancy. She is not to be moved without my order, and I am not giving one."

"Our own doctor will sign."

"Then your doctor can come here and examine her. I'm not releasing her to a private clinic with her blood still in my lab."

"What blood?" said one of the wives.
