Chapter 5: The Name on the Slip

I stood up.

My chair scraped the floor and stayed where I left it.

'Mr. Marsh,' the older officer said again. 'Who did you send to collect your daughter?'

'He won't answer you,' I said. 'Let me.'

Desmond's head came around.

'Mrs. Marsh,' the officer said. 'Sit down, please.'

'I'll sit in a moment.'

I kept my hands on the table so they could see I was steady.

'The woman at the nursery desk wrote Josie Pruitt's name on the collection slip,' I said. 'She wrote it where the mother signs. Not the grandmother. The mother.'

The officer wrote that down.

'And my husband called the school at nine and authorized the release of our daughter to my mother-in-law.'

'I did no such thing,' Desmond said.

'You did it in the lobby,' I said. 'The receptionist heard you. So did your mother.'

Diane did not move from the back of his chair.

'She's not well,' Desmond said to the officer. 'My wife. She hasn't been well for weeks. I'd like that written down.'

Diane's hand closed on the chair back.

I set my phone on the table and turned it face up.

'This is my husband,' I said, 'at this table, twenty minutes ago.'

I pressed play.

His voice came out of the speaker flat and clear.

'I will have you declared unfit and take her tonight.'

The officer looked at the phone. Then he looked at Desmond.

Desmond's face went the color of the wall.

I watched his eyes go to the folder and stay there.

He was not thinking about the recording.

He was thinking about what was under the wet page.

His hand came down and caught the edge of his cup.

Coffee went across the folder Corinne had set in front of him.

The top page slid out from under the rest, wet through the corner.

I reached over and lifted it by the dry edge.

I turned it so the officer and the two board members could read it.

'Petition for custody,' the board member nearest me said. 'Filed this morning.'

'Read the date under it,' I said.

The officer read it.
