Chapter 14: What He Does

Ronan's POV

The doctor's kitchen smelled of burnt coffee and iodine.

He sat across from me with a manila envelope under both hands and did not push it over.

"I ran the blood twice," he said. "Once on the machine at the clinic, once by hand, because I didn't believe it."

"And?"

"Wolfsbane. Old, patient dosing, over about three weeks. Another week and his heart stops."

I took the envelope.

My hands were steady. I had practice at that.

"Who else has seen this?"

"Nobody. I'm the only one who touches the Alpha's blood. That was your wife's idea, in front of the hall, and I'm grateful for it."

My wife.

I let the word sit in my chest for a second longer than I should have.

Last night she had fallen asleep on my shoulder, and I had lain awake until dawn afraid to move.

At first light she had put her hand on my face and said my name, and I was not afraid at all.

That was a different kind of danger.

"Keep this house locked," I said to the doctor. "Wynn has two men on your street from tonight."

"You think he'll come for me?"

"I think he's a patient man who ran out of time."

The doctor looked old for a moment.

"I'll make tea," he said, and then heard himself, and laughed without any pleasure at all.

I did not drink it.

I drove the Salt Road after dark with the envelope inside my jacket and the window cracked, so the cold would keep me awake.

I knew what I wanted to do.

I wanted to walk into the Merrow lodge, put the report on the table in front of Dorian Danbury and take his head off at the neck.
