Chapter 17: Lyra Speaks

Lyra rose from the first bench slowly, with one hand on the wood.

She was very pale, and her collar was buttoned to her chin.

I heard her mind, and it was the loudest thing in the room.

Don't. Don't. Don't. He'll smile at you and you'll say it was nothing, like always.

Dorian stood with his hand out toward her, patient and fond.

"Tell them, love," he said. "Tell them how your sister has been these past weeks."

Lyra looked at his hand.

She looked at me.

For one second I saw the girl who used to climb into my bed in thunderstorms, and I did not breathe.

Then she turned her back on him and faced the circle.

"I'll tell you what I saw," she said.

Her voice was thin and clear, and it carried.

"My sister is not unwell. She is the only person in this family who has ever told me the truth."

A stir ran across the benches.

Dorian's smile did not change.

"Lyra," he said softly.

"I'm not finished."

She put her fingers to the top button of her collar.

It took her three tries to undo it.

She pulled the cloth down, and the whole circle saw the bruise along her jaw, going yellow now at the edges.

The room made one low sound.

"I got this three nights ago," Lyra said. "The night of the bridge. My husband locked me in our room and took my face in his hand because I asked him about a tea tin."
