Chapter 13: The Chapel Steps

The stair landing was too small for what he'd just said.

Somebody's office door opened below us, and two voices came up the stairwell, laughing about a parking ticket.

Wyatt took my wrist and walked me out the side door of the administration building.

He didn't let go until we reached the chapel steps.

It was a bright, blowing afternoon.

Freshmen were throwing a frisbee on the quad.

The white chairs for commencement were already stacked under tarps along the walk, eleven days early.

I sat down on the top step because my legs told me to.

He stayed standing.

"Say it again," I said.

"You heard me."

"I want to hear it with nobody's door opening."

He looked out at the stacked chairs.

"I woke up at five o'clock on the day of the formal," he said. "In my apartment. On the floor by the rowing machine."

"I'd died in a hospital bed a little after midnight. Commencement night. So that was the last thing I remembered."

I hadn't known that.

I'd gone first.

I'd never found out what the car did to him.

"You died," I said.

"Internal bleeding. They tried for a while."

He said it like a race result.

"Then I was on my floor, and it was three weeks earlier, and my phone said five o'clock."

"Five," I said. "I woke up at ten past nine."

"I know. I watched you do it."

He finally looked at me.

"You went white on that stage. You looked at your own hand like it belonged to someone else."

"I knew right then. Nobody refuses Brock Pollard into a microphone unless they've seen the end."

"And you still walked out."

"I'd already decided by six," he said.

"Decided what?"

"I called your father. I wrote the list. And I decided I'd keep you alive and stay out of the rest of it."
