Chapter 4: Keys on the Counter

Jenna was crying in our living room when I opened the door, and her friend from the theater department was filming it.

Three cardboard boxes sat on the rug.

One held Jenna's shoes.

One held my cashmere throw blanket.

The third held the espresso machine I'd bought for the kitchen in September.

"Oh," Jenna said, in a small voice, and pressed herself back against the bookcase. "Annabel. I didn't think you'd come home."

Her friend swung the phone toward me.

The red dot was on.

"I live here," I said.

"I know. I just..." Jenna's big brown eyes filled right on cue. "After last night. After what you did to Brock. I don't feel safe."

The friend shifted to get my face better.

I'd lived with Jenna Cobbett for almost four years.

I had held her hair the night she got food poisoning freshman year.

I'd paid for her flights home at Thanksgiving.

I also knew exactly what she'd be laughing about in three weeks.

I smiled at the camera.

"Keep filming," I said. "Please. I want this one on the record."

The friend hesitated.

Jenna's tears stalled for half a second.

I took out my phone and opened my banking app.

"Jenna's moving out," I told the camera. "That's fine. Let's do it properly."

I turned the screen so the lens could see it.

"This is the rent on this apartment. Thirty-two hundred a month."

"This is my account it comes out of. Every month since August of freshman year."

I scrolled.

"This is Jenna's share. Zero. Every month."
