Chapter 9: Pollard Ventures

"Not again?" I said into the back of Wyatt's soaked shirt.

He didn't answer.

The white SUV sat at the bottom of the stairs with its high beams on us and its engine purring.

Then the driver's window slid down.

Jenna leaned out into the rain, in her green dress, laughing.

"Relax, Kincannon," she called up. "I'm just getting the heat going. You said you'd drive me home."

Wyatt's arms came down slowly.

"Go home, Jenna," he said. "I'll get a ride."

"Your loss."

She hit the gas and the SUV slewed out of the lot and onto the river road, taillights smearing red in the wet.

I was holding the railing with both hands.

Wyatt turned around.

His face was white under the boathouse lights.

"What did you mean, not again?" I said.

"Reflex," he said.

"That's not a reflex. That's a sentence."

"It's a figure of speech."

"For what?"

He looked at me, and for one moment I thought he would tell me.

Then he peeled my fingers off the railing, one by one, gently, and stepped back.

"Maisie will drive you," he said, and went back inside.

On Friday night I went to war with Brock's fraternity.

The house was the big brick one at the end of Elm Row with white columns and a lawn full of red cups.

The party was loud enough to hear from the corner.

A black Porsche was parked across the bottom of the driveway, brand new, gleaming under the porch light.

Maisie stopped dead on the sidewalk.

"Is that..."

"Pollard Ventures," I said.

"Oh, I'm going to enjoy this."

Inside it was dark and hot and smelled like beer and body spray.

Brock was holding court by the fireplace with a drink in his hand.
