Chapter 15: The Photographs

By morning the photo was on every phone in the city.

I stood at my bedroom window at six and watched the reporters pile up outside the estate gate.

There were vans with satellite dishes. There were forty people with cameras and one with a bullhorn.

Someone knocked, twice, and did not open the door.

"It's me," Gabriel said. "You told me not to touch you. You didn't say anything about knocking."

"Come in."

He was in yesterday's shirt. He had not slept, and neither had I.

"It's tomorrow," he said. "I get my question."

"Ask it."

"What am I to you right now?"

I thought about lying, and I didn't.

"A debt," I said. "One I'm collecting a little at a time."

He nodded slowly.

"Thank you for the truth."

"You haven't heard the rest of it. It's also a man I'm not ready to look at."

His eyes closed for a second.

Then my phone lit up on the dresser. TRENTON.

I picked it up and put it on speaker so Gabriel could hear.

"Cami!" Trenton's voice was warm and wrecked. "I just saw it. I'm so sorry. Are you all right?"

"I'm fine, Trenton."

"This is a nightmare. I'll find out who leaked it. I'll have the whole security team on it."

"Thank you," I said. "You've always looked after us."

Gabriel's face went still.

"Anything you need," Trenton said. "Anything at all. I'm coming over."

"Don't. I'd rather you stayed at the office and kept the board calm."

"Of course. Whatever you want."

I hung up.

"He leaked it himself," Gabriel said, very low. "He had those photos from the camera over the east hall."
