Chapter 24: Consent Granted
On Monday morning I took the chair at the head of the boardroom table.
It was Gabriel's chair. It was too big for me, and I did not move it.
Nine directors sat down along the oak, and not one of them would meet my eye.
"Eight of you voted to remove my brother from this company," I said. "You did it at the word of a man who is now in prison."
"Miss Lockwood, we acted in good faith," the chairman began.
"You acted on a card Trenton Hightower had already counted for you."
I slid a stack of papers down the table.
"These are your resignations. Eight of them. I have signed the acceptance for each."
The room erupted.
I waited until it was quiet again.
"The ninth director kept her hand in her lap," I said. "She stays. She'll chair the board."
The woman at the end looked up in shock. I nodded to her once.
The chairman stood. His chair scraped. He picked up his pen and signed, and so did the rest.
When the last of them had walked out, the door opened again.
Gabriel stood in it.
He wore a plain gray suit that was not one of his old ones. He had a visitor's badge clipped to the pocket.
"You wanted to see me, Miss Lockwood?" he said.
He kept his face perfectly straight. I almost lost it.
"Mr. Lockwood. Sit down."
He sat in the chair across from me, at the foot of his own table.
"Your new position," I said. "Assistant to the head of operations. Entry salary. You report to a woman who has been here twelve years and has no reason to like you."
