Chapter 12: What March Means

I called Grandma from Luka's couch at midnight, and she answered on the first ring.

"I wasn't asleep," she said. "I never am. What did she do?"

"Mom took Savannah home. I think they know I talked to her." I looked at the black phone on the cushion. "Grandma, there was a text. It said, 'Keep her at eighty until her birthday.'"

She was quiet for a moment.

"Open the envelope," she said.

"You told me not to."

"I told you that at lunch. It's midnight, and I have changed my mind about a number of things." Her voice was calm and dry. "Your grandfather was a careful man. He was never careful for nothing."

I broke the wax seal with my thumbnail.

Luka sat on the other end of the couch, close enough to read and not close enough to crowd me.

There were two pages in blue-black ink, written in a hand that slanted hard to the right.

My dear granddaughter,

If you are reading this, you have turned twenty-one. I hope someone is kind to you in the house I built.

On this day, the lake house and fifty-one percent of Thayer Marine Supply pass to you, as the first grandchild of my blood.

Your father has held them in trust since I died. He is a good manager and a poor judge of people.

I did not trust him to do the right thing with what was not his.

One condition. If you are found to have committed a crime, or have cut yourself off from this family before you turn twenty-one, everything passes to the grandchild raised under our roof.
