"That's Grandma's brooch," I said.

I said it across the whole table, in a normal voice.

Forks stopped.

Savannah's hand went to her throat. "Cadence, please. Not tonight."

"You're wearing it tonight."

"It was a gift." She turned to the table with wet, wide eyes. "I've explained this. Grandma gave it to me years ago."

"Years ago," I said. "At the last dinner you said she gave it to you this fall. The housekeeper found it in my suitcase. Which is it?"

"Cadence," Mom said, in her warning voice. "We agreed to start fresh."

"We didn't agree to anything. Dad made a toast."

An uncle coughed.

Dad set down his glass with a small click.

"The brooch was a gift from my mother," he said. "To Savannah. I won't have you calling your sister a liar at my table, after what you put this family through."

"What I put the family through."

"You accused your sister of a crime she didn't commit. You humiliated your mother in front of her relatives. You walked out." His voice rose. "And Savannah, who has every reason to turn her back on you, wore this tonight to show she doesn't hold it against you."

Savannah dropped her eyes, a saint in navy.

I looked at the brooch on her collar.

It was the one from the video, the one I'd held in my own hand.

And she was wearing it in front of everyone who had seen her slide it into my suitcase.

She wasn't afraid of them, I realized.

She was daring them.

"I left it by your wineglass that night," I said to Dad. "Did you hand it back to her yourself?"
