Chapter 23: The Lake House
We reached the lake house just before noon.
Dad's black sedan was parked across the gravel drive, with the trunk open.
A white van sat behind it.
On the porch a man in coveralls was kneeling at the front door with a drill.
"That's the locksmith," Luka said.
"I know."
"Stay behind me."
"No," I said, and got out.
Dad stood on the porch with a leather folder under his arm and a small, stiff smile.
He had shaved and put on a tie, the look of a man arriving to take possession.
"Cadence," he said, pleasantly. "Good. You can help your grandmother pack."
"Pack for what?"
"She's confused. After last night, anyone would be. The family has decided she'd be safer in a facility near the city." He tapped the folder. "I hold power of attorney. This is a medical matter."
"It's a drill," I said.
"Locks need changing. There have been strangers in the house."
"Me, you mean."
"Yourself and your friends."
The locksmith looked up at us, uncertain.
On the lawn next door, a woman in a fleece vest had stopped raking leaves.
Past her, two men in waders stood on a dock, pretending to look at the water.
The nurse opened the front door from the inside, and the locksmith nearly fell over.
"She's awake," the nurse said. "She's had her breakfast. She says she'd like to see the man with the drill."
Grandma sat in the front hall in her wheelchair with her cane across her knees.
She had a manila folder of her own in her lap.
"Phillip," she said. "Good morning."
"Mother, I'm trying to help you."
"By changing my locks."
"By keeping you safe from..."
"From whom?"
He glanced at Luka and me, and the nurse, and the audience on the lawn.
