Chapter 18: The Friend Who Broke

Diana's POV

"Show it to the judge," my lawyer said on the courthouse steps on Friday morning. "That message from Bryson. It ends this today."

I looked at Elias.

He had been quiet since Wednesday, and he had barely slept, and he stood beside me in his dark coat while the cold wind blew.

"Don't," he said.

"Why not?"

"Because it names the gala. If they know you hold it, they'll cancel and vanish. Bryson will say he was joking and Marcy will cry." He put his hand at the small of my back, in public, where he was allowed. "I want them on that stage with four hundred witnesses."

I thought about the terrace.

"Keep it," I told my lawyer. "We'll win without it."

The courtroom was small and brown and stuffy.

Marcy sat at the petitioners' table with Bryson and a lawyer I'd never seen.

She wore gray and no jewelry, and she dabbed her eyes.

The judge was a gray-haired woman, and she had clearly read the file twice.

"Doctor," she said to the man in the witness chair, the one from the hospital corridor, in his good overcoat. "You signed this affidavit."

"I did."

"It states that Ms. Pellam is in a confused and unstable condition."

"Based on reports from her family and friends."

"When did you last examine her?"

He hesitated.

"I haven't had the opportunity."

"You've never examined her."

"I was given extensive reports by Ms. Dolan..."

"By a woman who stands to take over the foundation if this petition succeeds," I said quietly to my lawyer, and my lawyer stood.

"Your Honor. The reports on which this doctor relies came from the petitioners, and from nobody else."
