Chapter 24: A Key

I didn't touch his keys.

"No," I said.

He nodded.

He didn't pick the ring back up either.

"Then tell me what it costs," he said. "I'll pay it."

"That's the problem. You think everything's a price."

I came around the counter.

The shop was dark except for the lamp over the bench.

"You want a key to my door? Here's what it looks like." I held up one finger. "No money. Not for me, not for the shop, not slipped under anybody's door."

"Fine."

"No managing. Nobody fixed in a back room. Nobody falls down on the way to the bank."

"Fine."

"And the truth said out loud," I said. "Not to me. I already know it. To the people who heard the lie."

He was quiet.

"You told your mother," I said. "Good. Your mother isn't who you told to keep it from me."

He understood then.

I watched him understand.

"The club," he said.

"The club."

The men who'd sat around that table and nodded while he solved his problem.

The underboss who'd asked what if your wife finds out, like I was weather.

Cesare picked up his keys at last.

"Thursday," he said. "Nine o'clock. Gravesend."

"I'm not coming as your wife."

"Then come as my locksmith." The corner of his mouth moved. "You told me once you'd change every lock in it while I was inside."
